BODEGAS GRANBAZÁN CONTINUES ITS ACQUISITION OF THE BEST VINEYARDS IN RIAS BAIXAS. 16 NEW HECTARES, AND INCREASE IN STATE GROWN VINEYARDS OF 55%

 In News

The company, under the business leadership of Pedro Martínez, is carrying out its expansion by acquiring the plot adjacent to its flagship estate Finca Tremoedo (Vilanova de Arousa). Bringing its total area of state grown vineyards to 36 hectares, which will allow to increase its production and the implementation of further sustainable plantings.

The winery, also relies on the talent of its renowned winemaker, Diego Ríos. Named ‘Young Winemaker of the Year 2023’ by the journalist and Master of Wine Tim Atkin, he is now in his fifth year overseeing the winemaking process. His career obtained international attention from the influential FORBES Magazine in USA, which published an in-depth report on his work on the winery.

Until now the winery had a total of 20 hectares under vine, following the acquisition of the 5 hectares plot OMuro a few years ago. In the current expansion phase, 16 more hectares of vineyard are incorporated, which allows Granbazán to have a total area of 36 hectares of Albariño.

The purchase of the land is strategic for the business, since the vines’ proximity to the winery will ensure the continuity of the quality and identity of their wines, which are already recognised nationally and internationally for their personality, elegance and the great aging potential.

Pedro Martínez has been at the head of Granbazán since 2017. He has guided it to becoming Spain’s first winery accredited with the Fair N Green certification, an outstanding recognition of sustainability defined on the basis of an overall assessment across various areas, including ecology, circular economy, value chain and responsible management.
His professional profile dovetails with his dedication and passion for the world of wine. In addition to owning Bodegas Granbazán, he also owns Bodegas Baigorri in La Rioja Alavesa (Basque Country).

A fresh but experienced winemaking at the helm of Granbazán
Ríos came to the winery from Germany to dedicate himself, along with the rest of the team, to producing wines that have served to raise the international reputation of the entire wine region. His five years at Granbazán builds on an already outstanding career behind him. After graduating from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile with a degree in agricultural engineering, he worked as a winegrower and winemaker in one of the most prestigious wineries in the Moselle (Germany) ‘Heymann-Löwenstein’. After six years there, armed with an expanded international outlook and significant experience in working with white varieties, Granbazán came calling. Pedro Martínez signed him to lead the winemaking department of the winery.
